At one time or another every adult during childhood has experienced nightmares, visions, or dreams that exhibit images of being chased by a dark shadow that only comes at night when the light switch has been turned off. This dark figure then hurts you relentlessly until you wake up with a pounding heart and a forehead beaded with sweat. Many have survived dreams of the so-called ‘boogie-man’ or the monster living in the closet. Some have even dreamed about a troll living under their bed. Even today, these old childhood fables cause some adults to occasionally check under their beds and inside their closets before they turn in for the night. Humans have always been terrified of not only being chased but hunted by something hideous, grotesque; something that only can be described as a monster; something that merely wants to maim, kill, or even eat the one having the nightmare.

The word monster has been chronicled as far back as the earliest Homosapiens from millions of years ago. For hundreds of years, scientists, scholars and religious leaders have been contrasting depictions of what the word monster means and from what origin the word began. Most individuals agree that evil is the best noun to describe this mysterious seven letter word that seems to have no beginning and no end. One question continues to challenge us: Do monsters really exist?
